To register a business name in Zambia, you must follow the procedure set out in the [Registration of Business Names Act No. 16 of 2011]. A business name is a registered trading name for a sole trader or partnership, it is not a separate legal entity, so you remain personally liable for business debts.
First, clear your proposed name. Create an account on the PACRA portal at portal.pacra.org.zm and apply for name clearance by proposing up to three names in order of preference. PACRA will check availability; an approved name is reserved for 30 days (extendable to 90 days).
Then, complete and file the registration form. Download the official [PACRA BN Form III (Business Name Registration)] from PACRA's website. Complete it in duplicate using block letters and file it with PACRA either through the PACRA portal (portal.pacra.org.zm) or at a PACRA office. This form is prescribed under [Registration of Business Names Act No. 16 of 2011].
Once registered, remember to file an annual return using [PACRA BN Form XIV (Cessation of Business)] within three months of your financial year-end to keep your business name active on the register.
