How do I get a driver's licence in Zambia?

To get a standard driver's licence in Zambia, you must be at least 18 years old and follow these steps: first, obtain a medical certificate from an approved medical facility; second, pass the computerised theory test at the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA); third, pay the fee for a Provisional Driving Licence; and fourth, at least 7 days later, sit and pass the practical driving test. Once you pass the practical test, you pay the final printing fee to receive your licence [Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002].

Bring your National Registration Card (NRC) or passport and your medical certificate when you attend RTSA for the theory test. The theory and practical tests must be done in person at RTSA offices. Fees are charged separately for each stage (provisional licence, tests, and printing). Current fees are set under SI No. 25 of 2024, so you should confirm the exact amounts on the official RTSA portal or ZamPass website before attending.

If you already hold a licence, you can renew it online through ZamPortal or ZamPass before or after expiry. If your licence is lost, you must obtain a police report and a General Affidavit, then apply for a duplicate. If your licence is defaced, bring the old one to exchange it for a replacement.
