Understanding the correct permit: Zambia does not issue a "work permit". If you are employed by a Zambian company, you need an Employment Permit [Immigration and Deportation Act No. 18 of 2010]. If your work is short-term (up to about 6 months), you may qualify for a Temporary Employment Permit instead. If you plan to run your own business or invest in a Zambian company, you need an Investor's Permit (minimum investment: US$250,000 for a new business, US$150,000 to join an existing one).
Who applies and what you must provide: Your Zambian employer applies on your behalf, you cannot apply yourself. Your employer, a practising lawyer, or a registered immigration consultant submits the application. You will need to provide an employment contract, your qualifications, a police clearance, and proof that the employer advertised the role in a newspaper and found no qualified Zambian available. You must also submit a succession plan showing how a Zambian will be trained to take your role. For a Temporary Employment Permit, requirements are lighter.
Where to apply and costs: Submit your application through the Department of Immigration e-Services portal at eservices.zambiaimmigration.gov.zm, or via ZamPortal under "For Immigrants". Before you start, confirm the current fee on the official portal, as fees are subject to change and are listed in both ZMW and USD depending on permit type.
