First-time NRC
To get your first NRC, you must be at least 16 years old and have had at least one parent who was a Zambian citizen when you were born. You must apply in person at a DNRPC (Department of National Registration, Passport and Citizenship) District Registration Office or during a mobile registration exercise in your area. Bring a deponent, a parent, blood relative, or legal guardian, who must present their original NRC (a photocopy will not be accepted). You will also need proof of your birth: a birth certificate, under-five card, record of birth, or a sworn affidavit. Your photograph will be taken at the office, and your card will be issued the same day. Your first NRC is free of charge [National Registration Act, Cap. 126].
Replacing a Lost or Damaged Card
If your NRC is lost, you must first obtain a police report. If it is damaged, bring the damaged card with you. Complete the replacement form at your nearest DNRPC District Registration Office. A replacement fee applies; please confirm the current amount on the official DNRPC portal or by contacting your local registration office, as the fee is not fixed in this guide.
Where to Go
Visit any DNRPC District Registration Office nationwide, or watch for mobile enrolment campaigns in your area. If you do not yet have a birth certificate, arrange an affidavit or under-five card before attending.
